5 minutes. That’s really not a lot of time. It’s only 300 seconds. It’s 1/1440th of a day. It’s 1/60th of an hour. It’s the length of the song Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, or I Will Find You by Clannad. But, for those of us who struggle, 5 minutes may be all we can get through at a time. When you’re drowning in the darkness, feeling hopeless, lost in the pain and sadness, not being able to see the way out, not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, 5 minutes may the best goal we can hope to achieve. Just to get through 5 more minutes. But, the way to help ourselves through those 5 minutes, is to celebrate that we did indeed make it through! At the end of those incredibly difficult 5 minutes, do something that makes you happy. Eat a piece of chocolate. Watch a movie that makes you smile. Listen to a favorite song. Whatever you do to make you feel good and rewarded. And then, once you have celebrated your latest accomplishment, start tackling the next 5 minutes. And repeat this over and over as you get through the day. Tackle 5 minutes. Celebrate. Tackle 5 minutes. Celebrate. Tackle 5 minutes.
But also remember that sometimes, even 5 minutes may be too much. So, it is okay to take time to simply rest. Lay in bed and start at the ceiling. Zone out for an hour staring at the computer screen. Sleep for a day. Whatever it takes to let your soul rest. BUT, you can’t stay resting! I know its tempting, to close our eyes and sleep for a very long time, but in order to win this battle, you HAVE to keep moving forward. Even if it’s 5 minutes at a time. You can do this. It’s just 5 minutes. 5 more minutes. You got this.
